We are still accepting registration FOR 2017-2018 DANCE YEAR

Come Joing The Fun

The annual dance recital will take place at Northern College (Last weekend of April).  All students will have the opportunity to participate and will gain valuable stage experience.

This year is not a costume year.

The below information about costume fees is only needed for 2018-2019 dance year

We order costumes every other year to help keep expenses down.

Costumes are ordered from a U.S. company.  Therefore costumes must be paid by November of the costume year.  Costumes are manufactured and not handmade.  (If they were handmade, they would be MUCH more expensive.)  Adjustments to your Childs costume may have to be made at your expense.
Costume fees range from $85.00 - $100.  A newsletter will be handed out to all students with ordering instructions and exact costume amount for your Childs class.

General Information

The Paula Davey Dance School has provided students with an exciting performance experience through its April recital since 1988 years.  It’s a chance to shine in front of family and friends that they anticipate with nervous excitement.
The recital offers our students a professionally directed performance that allows them to present to their families and friends the results of a year’s hard work, dedication, and progress.

A big part of the dance training process includes learning through performance.  The experience helps build self-esteem, self-assurance, and contributes to a sense of confidence.

The rehearsal process is a tremendous learning experience as well.  It helps the children develop retention skills, and by working with their classmates on a group performance, they learn the positive aspects of working as a team to create the best end result.

Dedication to recital commitments is the responsibility of both students and their parents.  I’ve created this handbook to in an effort to clarify what we expect from you in terms of commitments and responsibilities to the annual recital.

Students may leave the rehearsal after their group has been on stage, or they are invited to stay and cheer on their fellow dance team mates
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PICK UP YOUR TRASH.  Please only health snacks/foods.

The rehearsal allows the students to become familiar with the auditorium surroundings and feel comfortable with their performance, costume(s), and being on stage.

Participation in the rehearsal is mandatory.

Lighting, music cues, and all other logistics for an organized and professional performance are also rehearsed so that the students can also understand what is going on when they are on stage.

We try to run an organized and timely rehearsal; your help with the process will guarantee a professional production.  Please arrive 30 minutes prior to curtain.
Students do not have to remain at the rehearsal after they have completed their routines, but are welcome to stay to watch and support their other dancing friends.

REHEARSAL GUESTS
One parent or guardian may accompany each student to the rehearsal.  Please, NO SIBLINGS, BOY FRIENDS OR FRIENDS who do not dance!

HAIR AND MAKEUP
All female students are required to wear makeup for the recital: Ruby red lipstick, burgundy/brown blush, and eye shadow (not blue). Fake eyelashes if you wish.   Please follow the colour requirements.
Please do not apply black “wings” at the side of the child’s eyes.

Note: Do not share eye makeup unless on clean Q-tips. ***Pink eye is very contagious****

ALL HAIR TIES/HATS BANDS/FEATHERS MUST BE SECURED TO THE HEAD
Uniform hairstyles are required.
Ballet classes must wear their hair in a bun for Ballet (keep in a bun if dancer is in more than one routine. However, if time allows, older students may change their hair style)

All students are to wear a slick bun with a part in the middle unless special instructions have been given to the group.
Hip Hop classes may wear their hair in any style they chose.
Dancers with short hair must pull their hair away from the face.
Hair and makeup is just as important as the students costume and routine.
I understand if students are allergic to makeup!

PRE-PLANNING

The recital is not a one-day activity.  Gather all dance outfits, accessories, shoes, and makeup several days in advance so you’ll know if something is missing or isn’t right.
Bring at least one extra pair of tights.  DO NOT WEAR TIGHTS WITH HOLES.
Also bring extra hair gel, hairnets, bobby pins, hair spray, clear band-aids, and safety pins.  Label all your belongings
Let’s respect dancers with allergies and LEAVE THE PURFUME AT HOME.
DANCERS THAT HAVE MORE THAN 1 COSTUME CHANGE
These dancers must have their costumes labelled with tights and accessories in baggies. Label the routine/song name,
Check the schedule of the recital and layering tights will make it easier for the dancer.
At rehearsal, Miss Paula will give these dancers a “costume changer”. This person will be responsible of helping this dancer change into their next costume in a specific spot back stage and their costumes will be hung in this spot and that is why we need all costuming labelled with names. SHOW UP BACK STAGE EARLY TO ORGANIZE THIS.

FINALE

All students are required to participate in the finale. We understand that the production may be to long for our little dancers and we give them the option on participating.  All students will remain in their last performance costume for the finale.  If dancers are watching the performance, it is their responsibility to return to their change rooms or the dancer’s hallway by the 8th last dance.
DRESSING-ROOM ETIQUETTE
Students must respect other students’ space and property in the dressing rooms.  The students will spend more time in the dressing rooms than onstage or in the auditorium, so please do your best to keep them organized and clean.  NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE DRESSING- ROOM.  Water is acceptable.  LEAVE ALL VALUABLES AT HOME

AUDITORIUM RULES

No eating, drinking, or smoking is allowed in the auditorium or dressing rooms. This seems to be a touchy spot with many people.  Most theatres will prevent you from taking any food or drink into the theatre but if you are at a theatre that does not have ushers, the temptation is right there to sneak something in.  Let’s face it, accidents happen and this is the main reason why this not allowed.  It is dangerous.  If something spills on the floor and leaves a mess that is not cleaned up, it can be easily slipped on, especially in a dark theatre.  Dancers often run around in their bare feet or expensive dancewear, which can seriously ruin a pair of shoes if they encounter some sticky, wet beverage that has been spilled onto the floor.

BACKSTAGE

Family members and friends don’t belong backstage or in the dressing rooms.  The same applies during intermission.  There is a lot of backstage activity in a limited space, and dressing rooms are a private area.  Please remind your family and guests to be respectful of these areas.  Those who wish to greet a performer after the show or present flowers should do so in the lobby area.
Children are asked to arrive backstage 30 min prior to curtain time.  We ask that only 1 parent/guardian brings their dancer backstage, ensures that they have everything and are ready to perform and then leave their child backstage with our volunteer backstage moms.
It would also save a lot of extra stress on the parent and student if the dancer comes fully prepared with their hair and makeup done.

RECITAL VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

Anyone interested in volunteering to help backstage is welcome.  There will be an orientation for all volunteers, and all must abide by the policies set forth by the PDDS.  The recital weekend is a hectic experience. Our backstage manager works very hard to put a system in place that works.  All volunteers will receive an identification badge at the rehearsal, which must be worn in the theatre at all times.  Please do not bring guests, including children, with you while you are volunteering.
You will be able to watch your children perform from the audience.

RECITAL TICKET POLICY

All studio accounts (tuition, dance wear, etc.) must be paid in full before family may purchase recital tickets.
There are no refunds on tickets however exchanging tickets for a different night may be done up to 1 week before the recital.
Tickets will go on sale the first week of APRIL at the studio.
All Seats are priced at $15.00 and $20.00 at the door
Tickets will also be available at Chat Noir and Active One Source for Sports (cash only at these locations)

NOT ATTENDING ALL PERFORMANCES

The students work very long and hard on their routines and they come very accustom to who they dance beside, dance with a partner, or dance behind.  It is extremely hard for a student to suddenly find out their partner will not be attending that night’s performance.  PLEASE INFORM YOUR TEACHER IF YOU WILL NOT BE ATTENDING ALL PERFORMANCES.

RESERVED SEATING

***Contact The Studio For Reserved Seating For Any Guests That May need special attention. ***
THE BACK DOOR TO THE THEATRE IS THE ENTRANCE FOR DANCERS AND FOR ANY GUESTS THAT NEED HELP INTO THE BUILDING.

We would all like to enjoy a live production that the dancers have worked very hard for.

TURN YOUR CELL PHONE OFF

WHEN LEAVING THE THEATRE FOR WHATEVER REASON, LEAVE AT AN APPROPRIATE TIME.
Getting up and leaving the theatre is very distracting.  People’s attention leaves the stage and turns to you, especially if you are in the same row as them.  If you are nowhere near the intermission, then leave at an applause point.  Be aware however, that the ushers outside the theatre will wait for an appropriate time to let you back into your seat.  Sometimes this means you’ll miss your favourite part of the show, but it shows respect for those on stage and allows those still inside watching the production to not be disturbed again.

OBEY BACKSTAGE VOLUNTEERS

The people working backstage are volunteers and are helping out for that night.  They have been given a list of rules to follow to help the show run smoothly.  Nothing is more upsetting than having a parent or dancer that wishes to rock the boat and not follow the rules.

INTERMISSION IS FOR THE AUDIENCE AND NO THE DANCERS

15 minutes is all that is given for the audience of 500 people to get up and stretch their legs or take a fast trip to the washroom or concession booth.  When adding another 300 dancers to the front of the house, it is very packed and hard to quickly get things done before the second half of the show begins.  DO NOT INSTRUCT YOUR CHILD TO MEET YOU IN THE LOBBY DURING INTERMISSION; THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO.

DANCERS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE THEATRE

Tickets are sold for the dance recital and many times; the audience may arrive at the last minute.  They have their ticket, enter into the theatre but there are no seats available because the 150 dancers in the second half of the show have taken their seat.
All performers regardless of where they perform in the program must remain backstage.  Parents should not “save a seat” for their dancer that is performing in the show, they will be asked to give their seat up to the ticket holders.  Performers will be allowed to enter the theatre if space is permitting.
WE DO NOT HAND DELIVER YOUR CHILDREN AFTER THEY PERFORM AT THE RECITAL.
It is your responsibility to pick up your child at their change room, if you wish them to join you.

HELP TO MAKE THE RECITAL A FUN, ENJOYABLE EVENING FOR EVERYONE

TO ENTER THE THEATRE AS A GUEST

Almost everyone at some point has been at our facility.  The parking is in the back along with a main entrance.
This main entrance is NOT the entrance we wish to have guests arrive through.
You may enter through the front of the building.
There is also another entrance located in the back of the building just off the left side.  The entrance will bring you right to the front where the ticket takers will be.

We ask everyone for his or her cooperation and please do not use the DANCERS ONLY hallway.  This is for our children’s safety.

We also ask that no one use the 2 exit doors leading into this hallway.  Please enter and exit through the main doors located at the back of the theatre.  Again this is for the safety of our dancers.
I am thanking you in advance for your co-operation to making the recital evenings enjoyable for everyone.
